Hey everyone, been awhile.

Decided to chime in on this. My personal choice would be Dave Martinez, for the exact reasons Kyle and others have mentioned previously. Spending all those years learning as a bench coach under Joe Maddon (who should have been hired by the Blue last off season) gives him the edge over Kapler, IMO (who has basically managed just one season in the minors and hasn't spent any time in a ML dugout as a coach). The fact that he has been in the dugout for that time frame over Kapler might also create less of a possible issue in the clubhouse that the FO is/would be hiring a "talking head" for them making most of the decisions on the field.

That said, I would not be shocked to see Kapler get the gig. I think the "old school" candidates would be on the bottom of the list for this FO, except for perhaps Roenicke, (who I hope could stay on the staff). I wouldn't mind Kapler being in the dugout as a coach, however.

Speaking of Dave Martinez, Eric Stephen over at TBLA wrote up a nice article on him. Puts me even more in the camp for him being the next skipper:

Great article.  My only concern after reading it is that he (Martinez) has been interviewed for a manager job 5 times, and didn't get it each time.  Is that normal?  Is there something the owners/GMs are seeing that the players who endorse him are not?  Other than that, I like what he says about himself, as well as the ringing endorsements from Maddon and the Rays players.

Hey Kyle!

Yeah, I also have that question about his other interviews. Seeing that Friedman has known the guy for all the time they spent together in Tampa Bay, I would trust that any questions or qualms about his work ethic, attitude, etc. would already be known. Same applies to Kapler (for the time he has been in the organization).

I do think that Kapler is well thought of and it wouldn't surprise me if he indeed is the choice. I just think that the experience of Martinez being in the dugout beside Maddon and being in sync with the system that is in place would make him the man in the lead.

Then again, Larry Bowa is always available.

Martinez might just not share the same "by the book" philosophy that many teams cling to.
I wonder if it isn't also that it is just much harder to stand out in a crowd of interviewees when you have no managerial experience to evaluate.  It should be much easier for him to get a real shot when being considered by a guy that already has worked with him like Friedman has.

And Bowa will probably always remain still available.

Just listened to the Dan Patrick show. He spoke with Donnie. He really couldn't say anything concrete (WS embargo on outside team news) as far as the Marlins job. But, it sounded like the meeting he had went well and if I were a betting man, I think he is getting the job as soon as the news can be announced.

A few other things:

1. He mentioned that Puig is at a "crossroads" in regards to where his future production goes. Said that pitchers have figured him out and it's up to him to make adjustments.

2. Certain that Grienke is opting out and heading for a 5-6 year deal. Mentioned age being an issue, but also thought Zach could adjust as needed, if he loses some velocity, etc.

It will be interesting to see Mattingly exposed in Miami as a poor manager because that franchise is never going to be anything.

It will be fun, but I have a feeling that expectations will be much lower than here and he will manage to survive Loria's continual money grab.    The thing that is in Mattingdork's favor is that he is loved by the press and that is much different than the last few Marlin managers.

Hey, T2DB!  Welcome back.  Don't be a stranger!

Thanks for the link.  Good write up.  While Kapler is probably my #1 choice, right now, Martinez is 1A.  I would be really happy to see him as the next Dodgers manager.  As David said, I could see him veering away from "the book" as well.

Here's the write up, now, on Kapler:

Hey Matthew! Thanks.

To piggyback your Kapler article, here is another one (via Mark Saxon @ ESPN):

Also, here is a short video from SNLA on the manager hunt and candidates:

Well, looks like a candidate from left field (pun intended) will possibly get an interview...Darin Erstad.
I think the FO is looking at every possible option to finding someone that fits their vision. Not saying that he's the right guy for the job. Personally, I think there are better choices out there, if they are looking for the first time manager route. Then again, surprises seem to be the norm for this FO.
